The former governor of Chihuahua is back in Mexico, where he faces a lengthy trial over corruption allegations. Police arrested the politician in Florida in 2020 after he was on the run for almost a year.
This week, US authorities and their Mexican counterparts coordinated the extradition of former Chihuahua Governor Cesar Duarte, who arrived in Mexico City and has since been relocated to Chihuahua. There he is to go to various hearings. According to the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office, Duarte is on trial for embezzling public funds and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Duarte was governor of Chihuahua from 2010 to 2016 and represented Mexico’s Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI). At least three other Duarte administration officials have been arrested in connection with the case. As Breitbart Texas reported, Duarte is said to have fled to the United States in 2019 when he became the target of a corruption investigation by state investigators. In 2016, Duarte faced charges of using government money to pay off personal loans in Spain. In a civil lawsuit, Spanish creditors tried to have his assets confiscated for lack of payment.
Duarte is just one of several former Mexican governors who have been arrested or wanted by US or Mexican authorities. Former Tamaulipas Governor Tomas Yarrington (PRI) is currently awaiting sentencing in the US after being convicted of money laundering. As reported by Breitbart Texas, the politician fled to Italy to avoid arrest on multiple charges including drug trafficking for his involvement in the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas.
During his guilty plea in a US federal court, prosecutors dismissed the drug trafficking charges. Former Veracruz governor Javier Duarte (PRI) is currently in a Mexican federal prison on embezzlement and organized crime charges. Former Tamaulipas Governor Eugenio Hernandez Flores, also of the PRI, is currently being held in a Mexican prison in Tamaulipas and is awaiting extradition to Texas, where he also faces money laundering charges.
