The world’s largest hybrid ship is scheduled to be launched in 2024

  • The largest hybrid ship in the world is scheduled to set sail between Great Britain and France from 2024.
  • Brittany Ferries has chartered two of three hybrid vessels being built for StenaRoRo.
  • The 11MWh battery is about twice that of other ships, the company said.

A ship billed as the world’s largest hybrid ship will enter service in 2024, a ferry company has announced.

Brittany Ferries, which operates between the UK and France, has chartered two of three new hybrid vessels currently under construction for Stoneware.

Equipped with a battery equivalent to 11 megawatt hours, the battery capacity is “roughly double” that of other ships, according to the announcement on the company’s website and later CNBC.

The first ferry, named Saint Malo, is scheduled for delivery in 2024. It will operate between the British port of Portsmouth and the French city of the same name. The other yet unnamed boat, which will sail between Portsmouth and the French port of Caan, will enter service “shortly thereafter”, according to the announcement.

Similar to hybrid cars, a hybrid system combines conventional fossil fuels such as petroleum and diesel with electricity. The technology, while still harmful to the environment, is an important step towards the commercial rollout of all-electric vessels.

The ferries will continue to improve efficiency through the use of systems that allow them to better optimize energy use while in motion. Overall, they enable a 15 percent improvement in greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel, according to the announcement.

“The extensive battery size will allow the vessels to operate at full power, using both propellers and all engines to maneuver in and out of ports with zero emissions, even in inclement weather,” said Hakan Agnevall, CEO of Wärtsilä, the manufacturing company batteries. Onboard power storage will allow the ship to charge batteries while docked, Agnevall added.

Like other transport industries, global shipping companies are under pressure to reduce their carbon emissions and environmental impact in the face of the climate crisis. Global industry accounted for around 2% of energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020, according to the International Energy Association.

The Norwegian company Hurtigen has already presented the world’s first hybrid cruise ship, the MS Roald Amudsen. Its maiden voyage was to Antarctica in 2019.
