Prince of Persia Remake postponed again

Rumors suggesting that Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is having development issues lead to confirmation of a new delay.

Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has taken a turbulent development. It wasn’t long ago that Ubisoft confirmed it would move the game’s development to a new studio, with Ubisoft Montreal taking control of the project. Since then, however, a new problem appears to have surfaced as reports emerged on Friday that the Prince of Persia Remake had been removed from retailers’ catalogs for upcoming releases. The reports were then confirmed, with Ubisoft confirming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time had been delayed indefinitely.

Friday’s reports began with a rumor that GameStop had removed listings for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time title coming from its database. The game was previously pushed to Ubisoft’s fiscal year 2023 and remained in GameStop’s database during this release window. The product’s removal indicated that Ubisoft had changed plans for the project. However, the rumor has yet to be confirmed, so it wasn’t clear what the status of the game was.

IGN was able to contact Ubisoft and received an official statement on the matter. According to Ubisoft Prince of Persia: The Sands of TimeThe Ubisoft Montreal remake is still in development as originally announced in early May. Instead of aiming for an FY23 target, Ubisoft has decided to delist the game entirely. Ubisoft is asking that pre-orderers ask their retailers for a refund or otherwise wait for an official update on the game’s development as it progresses.

The long and short of it is that Ubisoft can no longer commit Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘s previous release window and is taking time to evaluate what will happen next. This is both good and bad news. The good news is that Ubisoft is giving the project the time it needs to meet everyone’s quality expectations. The bad news is that despite years of development, it still has a long way to go.

Ubisoft never described what problems Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘s Remaster had while working at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. But the decision to move development to a new studio is never taken lightly. As the new delay shows, it’s effectively a newly launched project that fans probably won’t hear about for some time.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is currently being manufactured. Ubisoft Montreal is a much more experienced development team than both Ubisoft Puce and Ubisoft Mumbai, although it had its own issues for honor and HyperScape. As the fans know Prince of Persia deserves to be respectfully brought back at a level of quality that lives up to the franchise’s legacy. Hopefully this decision will make that possible.
