Depp Verdict: Actor wins defamation lawsuit as Heard awarded counterclaim

Johnny Depp emerged victorious in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard after the jury deliberated for three days, giving Heard a partial victory in her counterclaim as well.

Depp sued Heard for $50 million for alleging he molested her in 2018Washington Post op ed. Although she did not give his name, he claims her allegations affected his ability to work. She was pursuing a $100 million counterclaim.

The jury found that Heard defamed Depp on all three counts and awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages (up to $350,000). Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages but no punitive damages.

On Wednesday, the “humiliated” actor thanked the judges for giving him his life back and said that after six years, a new chapter is beginning for him. The actor is currently playing gigs on a UK tour with Jeff Beck and has told fans he is “still in shock”.

In a statement, Heard expressed “indescribable disappointment” and said she was heartbroken, claiming the ruling was a “setback” for women.; She has decided to appeal the verdict and is “unable” to pay the damages.

The actor made his final appearance alongside Beck at the Sage Concert Hall in Gateshead on Thursday night (2 June).

How much do Depp and Amber Heard owe each other?

Johnny Depp has won his $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard over domestic violence allegations.

A seven-person civil jury in Virginia found that Ms. Heard defamed the case Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts Star when she implied he had abused her in a comment in 2018 The Washington Post.

After an explosive six-week libel trial followed by millions on social media and live TV, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard face an uphill battle as they attempt to rebuild their image and career.
