The Last Case of Benedict Fox might sound like the name of a new Wes Anderson movie, but you won’t find perfectly symmetrical shots or custom pastel stationery here. The latest title from Rogue Games and Plot Twist is a Metroidvania with a gothic flair, and it looks like it will appeal to both classic 2D Metroid fans and anyone familiar with the Souls games’ challenging combat.
Rather than opening in a fantasy world, The Last Case of Benedict Fox begins in 1925 Boston, where a missing family literally sends the titular detective on a journey within himself as he battles demons and uncovers the truth.
The visual style of 2.5 is stunning, reminiscent of the works of Tim Burton or Laika, and gives the whole thing an Arkham Horror feel. Enemies also show the clear impact Lovecraft had on the game, and the snappy combat looks like it rewards careful timing and precision over aggression. As Fox explores other people’s minds, things become increasingly dangerous.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox will be released in 2023 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It will also be available in Xbox Game Pass.
