The developers at Scavengers Studio debut the stunning gameplay of Season: A Letter to the Future during PlayStation’s State of Play.
The June 2022 PlayStation State of Play event featured a variety of important announcements such as: Resident Evil 4‘s remake and Final Fantasy 16release window. In between these huge announcements, PlayStation still managed to shine a spotlight on some exciting upcoming indie games. Season: A Letter to the Future stood out among these indie showcases. A new trailer for Season One Last to the Future revealed exciting new gameplay while sharing new information about the upcoming release of the adventure game.
Season: A Letter to the Future was originally revealed in 2020 during this year’s The Game Awards presentation. The strange adventure game’s announcement trailer introduced the audience to a young woman riding her bicycle through beautiful environments, cataloging cultures in the moments leading up to the catastrophe. Her “Letter to the Future,” chronicling a final season, seemed as touching as it was tragic, but left interested indie game fans curious for more.
The new trailer for Season: A Letter to the Future offers a similar but more in-depth look at what was previously shown. It’s a more intimate look at the game’s protagonist and her work, including audio recordings, photographs, drawings, and interviews. There’s also a significant number of new environments and new characters, which are briefly teased in the trailer. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trailer is the pervasive melancholy despite all the smiling faces and beautiful settings.
Also next to the new confirmed Season: A Letter to the Future Trailer is that the game will be released later this year. “Fall” is the current release window, which is unfortunately unspecific but better than what interested gamers had before. Season: A Letter to the Future is now releasing for PlayStation 4 in addition to PlayStation 5 and PC, expanding the game’s potential audience.
Originally slated for 2021, it’s unclear if developer Scavengers Studio had issues with the game or if the scope of the project increased the time required for completion. Scavengers battled a controversy over abuse allegations against a co-founder of the company. It’s unclear how the controversy played out Season: A Letter to the Futureif any.
It’s somewhat surprising how similar Season: A Letter to the Future looks back and forth between his 2020 announcement trailer and the new 2022 State of Play trailer. Scavengers could be working to maintain the game’s mystery ahead of launch, or maybe the two trailers simply show how unified the vision for the project has remained over the years. Either way, it won’t be long before players can experience the beauty of Season: A Letter to the Future for themselves.
Season: A Letter to the Future coming to PC, PS4 and PS5 this fall.
